Nelson Mandela High School

Nantes (44)

Education, 2014

The site, which concentrates a stadium, a park, and a music school, already tends to promote an all-public access to knowledge. The High School Building is located right at the heart of these educational public spaces. It has the shape of a wooden hall, modeled on many buildings in Nantes: comfortable and bright “inside towns” open to their near and distant environments.

Inside the school, the great central nave gathers and connects all the characteristics of the program (boarding school, classes and gymnasiums). This dense building, systematic and modular, brings people together. As an ecopositive construction, it also creates comfort and energy.

To the South, the hall shelters the cafeteria and the students quarters, located by the Garden of the 5 senses recomposed. Contiguous to the High School, these buildings also operate in autonomy, through their own access from the Celestin Freinet Street.

“We have subverted the emblematic model of the industrial heritage of the Ile de Nantes, emphasising the readability and continuity of the programmes brought together in this great wooden nave, and creating a comfortable meeting place, exceptional in terms of its size, for high school children.”
